Method & assumptions
Roofing material is priced by the square, a unit equal to 100 ft² of finished roof surface, but your footprint is a flat, 2D measurement. We convert one to the other with the same pitch multiplier used by framers: the square root of the pitch (rise over a 12 in run) squared plus one, straight from the Pythagorean theorem. A 6/12 roof, for example, has a multiplier of about 1.118, so a 1,200 ft² footprint becomes roughly 1,342 ft² of actual sloped covering, before waste.
We add your waste allowance to that sloped area, then divide by 100 to get squares, rounding up because you cannot buy a partial square of material. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) recommends at least 15% waste for most re-roofing jobs; simple gable roofs with few cuts can run closer to 10%, while hips, valleys, dormers and cut-up roofs push it to 15-20% or more, since every angled cut wastes an off-cut that cannot be reused elsewhere.
Bundle counts come from the exact (not rounded) square figure, multiplied by the bundles each shingle type needs to cover one square: 3 for standard 3-tab shingles, 4 for the thicker architectural (laminate) shingles, per ASTM D3462 shingle specifications and typical manufacturer packaging. Underlayment (15 lb felt or synthetic) is figured at one roll per 4 squares, the standard roll size sold in the U.S. Ridge cap is estimated at one bundle per 33 linear feet of ridge, and drip edge at one 10 ft stick per 10 ft of eave and rake perimeter, both common supplier increments. Roofing nail count uses the trade rule of thumb of about 320 nails per square for standard 4-nails-per-shingle installation; check your local wind code, as high-wind zones require additional nails per shingle.
Pro tips and common mistakes
- Round waste up for cut-up roofs. Every hip, valley and dormer means angled cuts that cannot be reused on the next course. Budget 15-20% waste for anything beyond a simple gable, per ARMA guidance, rather than the bare 10% minimum.
- Match bundle count to shingle type. 3-tab shingles cover a square in 3 bundles; architectural (laminate) shingles need 4. Mixing up the two undercounts material on an architectural job by a full bundle for every three squares.
- Order ridge cap and drip edge separately. These do not come out of your field shingle bundles. Measure the ridge line and the eave/rake perimeter separately, the way this calculator does, so you are not short a box on install day.
- Check your minimum slope. Standard asphalt shingles need at least a 2/12 pitch, with special low-slope underlayment required between 2/12 and 4/12. Below 2/12, shingles are not code-compliant and you need a low-slope membrane roof instead.
- Confirm wind-zone nailing. The 320 nails per square figure assumes standard 4-nail-per-shingle installation. High-wind zones and steep slopes often require 6 nails per shingle by code, which raises the nail count by 50%.
